"READING A COMPACT, NON-NARRATIVE HISTORY" - Malcolm Bell, author

For me, this was reading a compact, non-narrative history.  The timelines reminded me of events I have read about and, since the 1930s, lived through.  They filled me in (in spite of their brevity) on interesting facts and corrected some of my misconceptions.  They and the commentaries evoke the temper of the times and give this reader a feel for the periods – as you say of the commentaries, they “give the reader a feeling-based sense of the era.”
The commentaries are great.  I’m very glad you often quoted people on both sides of issues, rather making the commentaries all your own summaries of what they said – Molly Ivins, Angela Davis, Patrick Buchanan, Pat Robertson, etc.  While you have obviously done a great deal of work on this project, even more commentaries would be welcome.
